Arroyo to give cash assistance to Masbate
MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo will give cash assistance to the victims of the MB Don Dexter Cathlyn, which capsized off Masbate province Tuesday afternoon, killing 43 people. Deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelie Fajardo said President Arroyo would visit Masbate Thursday to personally extend her sympathies to the victims of the tragedy. But Fajardo said the President would distribute P50,000 to the families of each of the 43 fatalities, P10,000 to the families of those who are injured or still missing, and P5,000 for those who survived the incident. She said MalacaƱang is closely working with the local government of Masbate and other concerned agencies to ensure that immediate assistance is extended to the victims of the ill-fated motor banca. "Palace is coordinating with the local government and the Philippine National Red Cross and Coast Guard to extend all necessary help and support to rescue remaining missing passengers," she said. Latest reports from Masbate said 43 bodies have already been recovered while 10 are still missing. More than 100 passengers have already been rescued from the Bulan-bound vessel that capsized reportedly due to a squall or a sudden increase in wind speed. - GMANews.TV
